What are the file systems ??

What are file systems?

Drives are storage media, which can hold a file system. When a disk is formatted in a drive, it becomes organized and prepared to receive data. When we format a disk, it receives a file system.Formatting can be compared to starting a library. You must install the book shelves and the catalogue system before any books are put in place. Once the library is ready, bring on the books! Similarly with a disk. When we format it, we "burn in" a file system to make it ready to receive data (files).

We can format with any one of several different file systems:

FAT (File Allocation Table), the original, old 16 bit DOS system is probably used in 90% of all PC’s. It is
also called FAT16

FAT32 a new addition to FAT, which Microsoft introduced with Windows 95 B – The December -96 versi
(OSR2).

HPFS (High Performance File System) from OS/2. It is an advanced 32 bit file system, which in all
respects is far superior to FAT, except for possible usage. It can only be used with OS/2.

NTFS from Windows NT. A 32 bit file system like HPFS, but not compatible with it. NTFS can,
unfortunately, only be used in Windows NT. If it was available for use in Windows 95, it would be far to
preferable to FAT and FAT32.

NetWare is a server operating system from Novell. It has its own 32 bit file system. For that reason, the
Novell server, contrary to NT or OS/2 servers, cannot be used as a work station. The file system is much
faster than FAT, but it works only with Novell servers (typically file servers).
l
UNIX servers have their own filing system. Here the use of upper/lower case in file naming is significant.l
Read in the following pages about the concepts of these file systems.

Relationship between file system and operating system

We see that that the file system is an integral part of the operating system. An operating system can sometimes
work with different file systems:

Operating system                                               File system(s)
DOS                                                                   FAT16
Windows 95                                                       FAT16, FAT32
(actually VFAT: Virtual FAT, which provides
access to use long file names)
Windows NT                                                      FAT16, NTFS
OS/2                                                                   FAT16, HPFS
Novell NetWare                                                  Own "brand name"

The file system is actually the interface between operating system and drives plus disks. When the user software such as MS Word, asks to read a file from the hard disk, the operating system (Windows 95 or NT) asks the file system (FAT or NTFS) to open the file:

GRE BIG BOOK free Download

Hello Readers ,

The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a standardized test that is an admissions requirement for many graduate schools in the United States, in other English-speaking countries and for English-taught graduate and business programs world-wide. Created and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS) in 1949, the exam aims to measure verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing and critical thinking skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study. The GRE General Test is offered as a computer-based, computer adaptive exam administered by selected qualified testing centers; however, paper-based exams are offered in areas of the world where computer-based testing is not available.

What is rainbow table ???

Rainbow table

rainbow table is a precomputed table for reversing cryptographic hash functions, usually for cracking password hashes. Tables are usually used in recovering the plaintext password, up to a certain length consisting of a limited set of characters.

You can download the official rainbow project from here, where you can download the latest version of RainbowCrack .

Rainbow crack is a tool where we can apply traditional brute force attack by guessing all the possible password one by one for cracking the passwords but this process consumes lot of time for cracking the passwords  .  The idea of time-memory trade-off is to do all cracking time computation in advance and store the result in files so called “rainbow table”.
These types of password crackers are implemented with pre-calculated hashes of ALL passwords available within a certain character space, be that a-z or a-zA-z or a-zA-Z0-9 etc. These are nothing but RainbowTables .

So where can i get these RainbowTables ???

Answer to this question is very simple , you can generate these Rainbow Tables by yourself but this will take lot of time and lot of diskspace.

The project shmoo is offering collection of rainbow tables via bit torrent and you can download them from here .

Paid Rainbow Tables
If you want to buy the Rainbow Tables you can buy from http://www.rainbowtables.net/ Or these tables are not free but they are cheap http://www.rainbowcrack-online.com/..

What is an antivirus and how does it work ??

What is an Antivirus ???

If you are using the computers for a while , you might have came across the terms called virus and antivirus . So if you want to know what are these terms and how does they work then this post is for you .

Antivirus or anti-virus software is used to prevent, detect, and remove malware, including but not limited to computer virusescomputer wormTrojan horsesspyware and adware. This page talks about the software used for the prevention and removal of such threats, rather thancomputer security implemented by software methods.

How does Antivirus Works???

An antivirus software typically uses many number of strategies in detecting and removing viruses, worms and other malware programs. The following are the two most widely used identification methods:

1. Signature-based dectection (Dictionary approach)

This is the most commonly used method which involves searching for known patterns of virus within a given file. Every antivirus software will have a dictionary of sample malware codes called signatures in it’s database. Whenever a file is examined, the antivirus refers to the dictionary of sample codes present within it’s database and compares the same with the current file. If the piece of code within the file matches with the one in it’s dictionary then it is flagged and proper action is taken immediately so as to stop the virus from further replicating. The antivirus may choose to repair the file, quarantine or delete it permanently based on it’s potential risk.
As new viruses and malwares are created and released every day, this method of detection cannot defend against new malwares unless their samples are collected and signatures are released by the antivirus software company. Some companies may also encourage the users to upload new viruses or variants, so that the virus can be analyzed and the signature can be added to the dictionary.
Signature based detection can be very effective, but requires frequent updates of the virus signature dictionary. Hence the users must update their antivirus software on a regular basis so as to defend against new threats that are released daily.

2. Heuristic-based detection (Suspicious behaviour approach)

Heuristic-based detection involves identifying suspicious behaviour from any given program which might indicate a potential risk. This approach is used by some of the sophisticated antivirus softwares to identify new malware and variants of known malware. Unlike the signature based approach, here the antivirus doesn’t attempt to identify known viruses, but instead monitors the behavior of all programs.
For example, malicious behaviours like a program trying to write data to an executable program is identified and the user is cautioned  about this action. This method of detection gives an additional level of security from unidentified threats.
File emulation: This is another type of heuristic-based approach where a given program is executed in a virtual environment and the actions performed by it are logged. Based on the actions logged, the antivirus software can determine if the program is malicious or not and carry out necessary actions in order to clean the infection.
Most antivirus software use combination of both signature-based and heuristic-based approaches for detecting the  malwares.
Thus it is very important for the users to get trained to practice safe surfing habits such as downloading files only from trusted websites and not blindly executing a program that is unknown or obtained from an untrusted source.

How to use windows character tool ???

If you ever thought of  inserting special characters in your documents or your email's, the Character Map tool of Windows can help you . You can access Character Map from either the Start Menu or by simply typing charmap in the Windows’ Run box.

Symbols like ☼ ♠ ♫ ♪ are part of standard fonts – like the Unicode version of Arial - but since these characters aren’t normally available on keyboards, you can drag them from the Character Map and drop into your document or email.

All Unicode characters are assigned a unique number – like 20B9 for the Rupee – but numbers are difficult to remember and, except for this Wikipedia page.

How to hack ADSL modems ??? (Prank)

Half of the Internet users are using ADSL modems for there internet connections , So many of them are not aware of serious vulnerability which exits in these ADSL modems . Today i will try to explain this Prank in this post .

We will use only one tool for this prank and that is Angry IP Scanner .

Step-1: Go to www.cmyip.com. Once the page is loaded you will find your IP address. Note it down.
Step-2: Open Angry IP Scanner, here you will see an option called IP Range: where you need to enter the range of IP address to scan for.
Suppose your IP is 117.195.231.132, you can set the range something as117.195.231.0 to 117.191.255.255 so that there exists atleast 200-300 IP addresses in the range.
Step-3: Go to Tools->Preferences and select the Ports tab. Under Port selectionenter 80 (we need to scan for port 80). Now switch to the Display tab, select the option “Hosts with open ports only” and click on OK.
Step-4: Now click on Start. After a few minutes, the IP scanner will show a list of IPs with Port 80.

Step-5: Now copy any of the IP from the list, paste it in your browser’s address bar and hit enter. A window will popup asking for username and password. Since most users do not change the passwords, it should most likely work with the default username and password. For most routers the default username-password pair will be admin-admin or admin-password.
Just enter the username-password as specified above and hit enter. If you are lucky you should gain access to the router settings page where you can modify any of the router settings. A sample router settings page is shown below.

What can Attacker do with your username and password of ADSL??

By gaining access to your router an attacker can change your ADSL settings , can disconnect you from internet and attacker can play some pranks with your ADSL modems .
